Weekend Wander 2

Jan 23: This weekend we went to explore one of the emirates we had never been to, Umm Al-Quwain. The kids were thrilled when we convinced out friends Mark and Karla (aka our adopted grandparents) to come along too! Once again, the things we read about and were trying to find didn't look quite the way we expected, but it was still fun! We ate a picnic in the shade of some trees close to a huge sand dune.

It was of course necessary to climb the dune and see what was on the other side!

Who can be bored with sand around?
Will is always the first one up these things :)
Owen wasn't going to make it up alone - so he caught a lift!

Our trip to the wetland preserve wasn't totally in vain - the kids found this plant and identified it from the guidebook we got!

We then went to see an abandoned (and rumored to be haunted) fishing village.  As we climbed through and around the crumbling buildings, our greatest finds were a herd of goats and a dead scorpion (hey, it doesn't sound like much, but when I first saw the scorpion I didn't realize he was dead. Imagine the levels of excitement THAT caused :)

Will REALLY wanted to bring the scorpion home. Shells and rocks? No problem. Dead things? No way.

Being right there close to the water, we finished off with some beach time. Water, sun, and sand, perfect ending to a fun day!
